the recital crashers

Above is Sam, dressed in a “dress-up” shirt with lots of buttons (that he does himself), at a concert – actually a recital at Punahou School. You’ve heard of Punahou – that’s where the President-Elect went. It’s a gorgeous campus, and you’d think it was a small college vs a K-12 school. Anyway – I stay tuned into free music events so I can take the kids often. I saw this chamber music concert (which I later found out was a recital) and decided to go. Fiasco or success, it would be memorable. Granted, it was at 2pm, so that meant right during naptime. But Dave has been working mid shift so we had to clear out of the house during the day so he could sleep. We went for a run, managed to lose my cell phone (thankfully not in a puddle!), got it back (answered prayer!), ate lunch, dressed, put on cologne (“you put it on your LEGS too!”) and headed out. Mom and Richard helped keep the kids quiet while I grabbed a quick shower. Off we went. I had high hopes. Sam is a very good concert-goer, and Ben had napped on the way over. We found good seats – up on this little terrace sort-of thing with a row of seats only one seat wide. But there was plenty of room to the right for me to stand up and calm Ben down. Things deteriorated quickly, though, with Ben. He wanted to play, crawl, pull up, grunt, and even poop. He had no idea he was supposed to be quiet. I put him under Sam’s chair to check things out. He liked the light. As he grunted more, I decided I wanted to hide, too. So I went down under the chairs. I tried to nurse him, but more grunting. He is a very active boy, for those of you who have not met him yet. He is a real wrestler. Try diapering him. He’s very strong – all muscle – and very loud. I thought we could make it through the whole concert but decided to vacate the hall and allow the parents to enjoy their musician children in peace. I also thought it might be best to leave early before everyone spilled outside for refreshments and notice who the crazy lady was with the little kids.

I love the photo of Ben under the seat. Yup. That’s him, alright. He’s incredibly mobile and curious. Speaking of diapering that little grunter, I did it tonight. What a wrestling match that is! That munchkin flips himself over with gusto as soon as you lay him down to get the dirty “diap” off, so you have to grab a leg and haul him back! Over and over you do that until you’re done. Then, if you don’t hang on to one leg, he’ll be gone again before you get the fat little rump on the new “diap.” Meantime, Sammy decided this was all so much fun that he should get in on the act, so he was hopping on gramma and doing his much-loved “mauling” of me with great laughter all around. Meantime, unbeknownst to me at that moment, my cell phone was advancing to the rinse cycle in your washer. After the diaper change, I sat on the couch and it “hit” me. OMG. My cell’s in Alli’s washing machine . . . again!

Note from Alli – last night Dave diapered him and managed to find the poop had popped out onto the carpet with all the flopping around Ben does!

Want to know what you thought of Punahou. Everyone I know who sends their kids there just LOVE it! The sports program is a good one, too. It is costly, may be the most costly on the island. Don’t know how poor little black boy Barry afforded it back in the day… but I do see how he was given a good education.
By the way, under the seat? Ha! That is hilarious. You never cease to amaze me.
