My first surfboard!

I didn’t anticipate how momentous this would feel, buying my first surfboard. I felt like a kid getting my first bike! We found a great deal on a used board on Craig’s list. I didn’t realize how expensive surfboards can be – a good deal on a new board is $400! This one is 7’1″ so it’s mid-size (not a longboard, but not short) so it will be manageable for me and hopefully fairly easy to learn on (the longer the better for newbies). We also bought a kayak from the same guy – a really nice person who took good care of his gear. The kayak is a one-man Scrambler with fishing rod holder, paddles and back brace. We got both board and kayak for $200! We’re so excited to have our first island gear! Now I’m eager to start my surfing lessons – our friend Mike will get me started, then when Johnny (aka “the crazy SEAL”) comes for Thanksgiving I’ll get further “schooling” 🙂 We’ve also really enjoyed meeting the community through Craig’s list connections. It’s fun to purchase things used from people who know the area. In addition to getting a good deal on tested equipment, you can get tips and establish new relationships. No better way to become involved in your new community. I really enjoy it and have met the nicest people this way. We’ll post pictures when we pick them up this weekend (we didn’t have the truck with us last night).

Thanks so much for all the news. I like Sammy’s ride. I saw it on other photos on the deck! So happy to see him making foot prints!

WoW! You are too cute! Yeah… surfboards are pricey little bugars. Sounds like a good size for you. I usually do a 9ft. longboard since I am 6ft. tall but 8ft. works fine too. Remember to paddle before the wave comes… surf on the outer, inside surf. That way… you get all the waves that the pros are missing behind you. Stay out of everyone’s way…. work on push-ups and lower, back stretches. Do you have a rash guard? Also, make sure there is a leash on it. Remember… “butt surfing” is not cool! You will realize what this is sooon enough… HHHHeeeee. Man… I really miss the ocean. Catch some waves for me! -Jenni
