Earthquake update via “messenger Mom-Oli”

Here’s the latest as of Sunday night, October 15 at 7 p.m. Hawaii time:

I (Oli) was able to get through by telephone just now. All is well, no tsunami is expected and there have been no reports of fires, fallen freeways or anything else that creates national hysteria. There are some legacies, however: there’s still no power and residents have been requested to stay off their cell phones to avoid overloading the phone lines. Dave is at work at the emergency operations center in Pearl Harbor and is expected home in a few hours, and Alli is a little jittery, of course. It is unnerving to come face-to-face with our “powerlessness”, but earthquakes ARE convincing!

There are signs posted saying the power company expects power to be restored around midnight. Meantime, Alli is lying down reading with a tea light on her chest, there’s been free ice cream in town because it’s melting anyway, and stores are taking cash only (electronic credit card readers don’t work), plus . . . ATMs won’t work until power is restored.

Fortunately, Dave and Alli had cash from their garage sale! They’re eating all their perishables, and had coffee cooked on the grill — a throwback to Sammy’s baptism which was on the day Poulsbo, WA had a power outage! Remember that Gail, Dan, Pammie and Leslie?

Sammy is a bit perplexed over why his fan isn’t turning around, and laughs when Alli talks about the “shakey-shakey” his crib did this morning.

According to the USGS earthquake site, they have had 63 aftershocks so far, which are weakening significantly, down to 1.9 on the all-too-famous Richter scale http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/HI2/19.21.-157.-155_eqs.php.

This morning’s noteworthy temblor was actually 2 quakes which were 7 minutes apart. The first was a 6.6 at 7:07 a.m.and the second was a 5.8 at 7:14 a.m. Alli and Dave felt them both and couldn’t believe they live about 150 miles from the epicenter which was on the Big Island, not on Oahu, which is where their house is. As far as Alli is concerned however, the epicenter was under THEIR house!

Dave laments not having a hand-crank coffee grinder (is there such a thing?). What else do you all think they need? There’s a “comment” section for you, which they’ll enjoy reading when the lights come on.

Stay tuned to the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/neic/ – browse around the site and you may find even YOU have had a recent quake!

The Hawaii Krugs send their love, and look forward to seeing your posts.
