Seattle PSC 001 The Pacific Science Center does a visiting Scientist Spotlight every now and then. It is fantastic - the kids get to see real scientists talk about their work with engaging, hands-on displays. It is WHY I renewed our membership today. This woman works on a vaccine for leishmaniasis, a parasite that can be deadly. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 003 Some drugs cause damage to the cells in your ears which have the little hairs on them - damaging hearing. She is designing drugs that don't damage these cells. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 005 Sounds that are safe, and not safe. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 006 This would block the drug from damaging the ear cells (red target). The Lego bricks would keep the drug from binding to that cell, protecting it. : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 007 Fish are used in the lab to look for genes that seem to be resistant to damage. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 008 The fish with this pentagon-shaped "gene" retained their hairs even when exposed to the drug. So...what proteins do their genes code for? How can we learn from that? : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 009 The only shape (gene) in common to all the fish with the hair still on was the pentagon "gene." : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 010 An anthropologist talks about figuring out how many people lived at a site based on what they left behind. Very interesting. : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 011 Pulling back layers of dirt to uncover what might have been a cooking site. This turned into a longer chat than you might think - how can you tell how quickly people left? : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 012 This scientist works for a cancer research center. He is a veterinarian as well. Very nice guy. Also liked crystals and rock collections as a kid. Turns out some viruses assume a crystal shape to be able to pack into a space more efficiently. The octahedron is a preferred shape. Sam liked that. This is us invading cells with our viruses. Some cells are easier to invade than others. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 013 Once in, the virus takes over the cell's machinery and makes more copies of itself. Fascinating and horrible little beasts. Fearsome things, viruses. I love them. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 014 Did our viruses infect the monkey? Nope! : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 015 Butterfly garden. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 016 Like a walk through Hawaii. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 018 We loved this guy. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 021 Thermal imaging display - very hot forehead! : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 022 Loved reading this! One just never knows. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 023 This is Ben. My nose is yellow - very cool nose! : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 025 Doing a slide - from basketball. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 027 On the monorail heading back to the ferry. Boys are just being silly - he looks mad but isn't :) : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 028 Trying to capture sweet shots - ha! : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 030 Uh oh - look where mommy turned in! A cupcake shop!!! : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 031 Yum - a cupcake with a view. I actually showed some restraint and brought one home to Dave, PLUS half of mine. They were good but rather disgusting, even for me! : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 035 Spotted in Seattle, for a friend who loves mustaches! : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 037 The boys love this ferris wheel and all its colors. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 041 Watercolor effect on camera... : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 042 They just zoned out watching the patterns change. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 044 We saw a documentary about the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Holy cow the work and the loss of life invested. Unbelievable. Led by two Americans - Van Horn (builder) and Rogers (eccentric surveyor). Really made an impression on us and now we want to take that route through magestic mountains and lakes - Banff, Whistler, Lake Louise... : Seattle PSC
Seattle PSC 039 : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 045 Couldn't have had a prettier day... : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 046 Even Rainier was out! Third hump past the ball fields. These cranes at rest reminded us of the hard work logging and railway building. : Seattle PSC Seattle PSC 051 Approaching Bainbridge now. Daddy is at work, but we had a great day and sent him many pictures. He is happy we made good use of our last weekend on break. I will miss the boys! : Seattle PSC
