swap meet success!

View from the deck at Waimanalo cottage. mom, sam and i stopped at the swap meet on our way to the airport today. the hawaiian swap meet is like nothing you’ve ever seen – it’s held three days a week and the vendor tents circle the Aloha Stadium twice! it’s unreal! the last time i went i had sam in the backpack and we were totally sweltering and uncomfortable on the asphalt. this time we went with a stroller and water, and only did maybe 2% of the circle 🙂 mom and i found great deals on dresses, shirts, board shorts and bikinis. i can outfit myself for anything, from casual to “aloha formal” with swap meet deals! i still need to canvass the jewelry and other accessories…another day! we enjoyed thinking about how crazy gail would get taking in all the bargains! we decided gail and mom could spend a day there and i’d just meet them with sam toward the end of their foray 🙂
a picture of the first bread to be made here is above as well. i took too many shortcuts and it came out rather dense – we had sandwiches for dinner tonight, so it was tasty, but not to my standards…i’m already looking forward to making the next loaf…
Umm . . . sunlight kills yeast. 😉 So if you really had it out sunning, prolly that’s why the bread didn’t raise like you wanted it.
Hi Deborah! Thanks for your comment – it prompted me to do some research since I’ve been growing sourdough starter and leavening bread outdoors in the sun for 3 yrs without a problem. (The dense bread this time was the result of no “proof” or second rise, and low oven temperature.) While UV radiation does kill some yeast (such as the types that cause “thrush”) not all yeast is radiation-sensitive. In fact, because UV radiation can cause damage to DNA, single-cell microbes (yeast) to multi-cellular organisms (us) have developed repair kits to fix radiation damage. Turns out, yeast has four repair mechanisms, more than we do! When I grow starter from wild yeast, the little critters enter the flour from the air, so they are living outdoors in the sun, counter to what we might think would be “healthy” for them 🙂 Thanks again for this early-morning brain exercise!
