Lanikai 8K
The boys and I ran the Lanikai 8K today (5 miles). Dave was a real trooper and acted as race crew 🙂 Despite a few hiccups, like the sign-up location moving at the last minute to a spot 1/4 mi from the start, we all got to the starting line in time. Just barely!
I was nursing Ben 6 min before the start, hidden behind the stroller and sitting in the grass. It is nice to get up early every now and then and really mix up your routine – you see the sun strike the mountains from a lower angle thowing great shadows, and the air is cooler. Sam and Ben were great race buddies and we met lots of nice people along the way. Sam really wanted to run this morning so we put on his trail runners and I let him run with me for the last .1 mile (so we stayed out of everyone’s way). He liked running across the finish 🙂

We were one of two strollers and the only double. Our time was much much slower than last year, but then again last year I was in killer shape and Sam and I managed to win second in my age group. This year my time was just under 55 min – very slow but still 5 min faster than my first race with Sam when he was 4 months old (vs 2 months postpartum and pushing 100lbs of kids/stroller). So I guess I shouldn’t be too chagrined. I will eventually get back into good shape…I’m just not very patient. It doesn’t help that I was messing around with Sam on one of those big exercise balls (surfing on it actually – trying to stay up on my butt with no hands and no feet) when I rolled off the back and landed on my head. I heard a sickening crunch in my neck and my life flashed before my eyes. Wouldn’t it just be like me to go out that way? Horsing around doing something wacky! My neck is a tad sore but ok 🙂
