Kitchen remodel underway

As soon as I dropped Doug and Mary off at the airport, I came home to begin pulling our kitchen apart for the remodel. This is not something a nesting mother wants to do. It is contrary to instinct. So I shirked and gave Sam a “yong, yong, yong reyaxing baff” while Dave dug into the awful task. The next morning, Monday, I was up to it. Here’s how things are looking after a day of demolition – no cabinets or appliances! The awful pressboard laminate pieces are at the curb. [Side note: a nice guy actually showed up tonight to load a few into his car to use in his garage. I had posted an ad in the “free” section on Craigslist suggesting such use. How cool that someone could use a few wall cabinets!] Sammy is very excited about workmen coming to the house and using tools. He packed some in his “go-bag” to take to Gramma and Grandpa Pete’s cottage to work on their kitchen. He’s been napping and playing over there while things are a bit hairy here. Tomorrow will be a wild day. We think about half a dozen people will descend upon the house to put up cedar tongue-and-groove over our awful popcorn ceiling, rewire the electrical, and install all the cabinets. The new cabinets are all here and the new appliances arrive tomorrow. I sold all but the dishwasher already – to another super nice guy from craigslist. It’s been quite a feat to source everything on island and get it all delivered within two weeks. When I first started researching and sourcing, I was told cabinets would cost $20,000 at minimum and take 8-10 weeks. Well, ours cost $4000 and were ready in 5 days. We were blessed to get good leads from our contractor – the cabinets are very nice. We can’t wait to see it all finished.

I forgot to mention in all the Thanksgiving notes that Mary taught Sammy how to count in French! Her job with Yves Saint Laurent takes her to Paris frequently, so she’s learning and we get to learn along with her. It’s amazing how quickly he picks it up. Not only does he count, but he knows what each number means in English. He knows about half a dozen other phrases as well. One of my life dreams is to be fluent in five languages so maybe Sam and I will enjoy learning together over many years. Then Dave won’t know what mischief we’re up to! ha!

Ultrasound tomorrow…cross your fingers we can figure out if the new baby is a boy or a girl…and look for a tell-tale picture here 🙂

Thanks for letting Sam take his “happy nappie” and some play time at our place. We’re having a wonderful time, even to letting him have a few “m-n-ms wif chocolate inside of dem”. We also love his version of “hide-and-seek”. Here’s how it goes. He sternly says to gramma, with finger shaking at her: “you stay right day-ah, riiiiight day-ah and no moving or wunning awound, and no wiggowing or jumping, just stay . . . right day-ah.” Then he runs outside and down to the gate, and returns on a run, and says: “BOO!” He wrestles with Grandpa Pete until one of them wears out . . . I’ll let you guess who.
