our first centipede!

Sam and I were out for some coffee after a run to the hardware store and I happened to glance over his shoulder to the ground behind him…I saw what looked like a roach caught in the door jamb. I went inside to grab the manager and he emerged to slay the beast with … a knife and fork! I was almost hysterical laughing and squealing in delight and apprehension. He stabbed it with his fork, then picked it up – the long segmented tail was twitching. He then cut off the head and the tail kept twitching. It’s now sitting in some rocks waiting for local birds to have a feast. I guess they don’t mind the toxin that causes your skin to disintegrate! yuck!
Fine looking specimen…….. Yuck!!!!!!!!
Do you have these around your house????
How long was it….. Do they bite?
Think I might change my mind about sleeping out in the yard!!!!!!
It was about 6″ long! I haven’t seen any around our house at all. I guess they could be hiding under rocks where it’s damp, and they like warmth so a lava rock would help with that. I did a quick Google on them yesterday – I read that there’s only been one recorded death due to centipede bite. Doesn’t really make me rest easier, and I’m sure a more thorough search on the topic would reveal that there are a ton of different types, so who knows! When out camping, having chickens around the site helps – they gobble up the centipedes no matter how big they are. You just keep your tent zipped up and shake out the bedding before crawling in. No different than dealing with spiders elsewhere, they’re just really gross looking and long!!!
