Monkey man, I love you.

Sam has worked so hard to master monkey bars for the past year. I admire your strength and persistence so much, Sam.

Dear Sam,

Your concentration is palpable in this picture I took today at the base playground. You have every playground and the options for monkey bars and rings memorized. You name the playgrounds accordingly: 7-ring playground, 10-ring playground, 5 option playground (with the MOST options for monkeybars and rings anywhere on the island!). You also describe your day according: “It was a 10-ring day, Mom!” Now you’re going across AND back on the monkey bars. I felt my own sense of elation when my hands were finally dry enough and the bars high enough that my feet didn’t hit the ground – I managed to get all the way across! I know how you feel now. And it’s been fun to jump off things at playgrounds, with your approval of course. You love to jump off just about anything! Right now it’s off the deck benches AND over the hibiscus.
You know what else I admire about you? Your strength and fortitude under other conditions, like being sick. You never complain. Truly. I can’t think of a time that you have EVER complained about any aspect of being sick – not coughing, nose running, tired. Nothing.  You just bear down and get through it. You know who else does that? Your dad. He never complains. But Mommy gripes. I get through it and I push myself and never let up, but I do complain!  I don’t like to be slowed down. And I’ll let you know as soon as I’m in the prodrome, for sure.
And lastly (I could go on but when you’re able to digest this all you’ll be 13 probably and hoping I keep my “Dear Sam” letters brief!), I admire your love of music. You love to listen to Eddie Kamae, Ten Feet, and The Band. You bring out lots of instruments for us all to play every afternoon, telling us when to join in after you do your uke solo. You’re playing your scales and ripping right through songs you know well. You have been doing chord progressions, too, which I love to hear because you enjoy strumming so much.
Sam, I love you very much and have treasured every day with you. I am wondering how sad I’ll be on your first day of Kindergarten. I know it’s a big step and I’m looking forward to it for you, but man I’ll miss you, our bike runs, trail runs, mudding, playground hunting, and all our other adventures.
Love,
mom

Beach boys!

With Dave back from Guam and all of us relatively healthy once again, we had a fantastic Saturday morning at the beach. We even skipped an uke lesson for Sam…probably not the first island family to yield to the pull of ohana time at da beach. Mom and Richard graciously served as cabana boy and girl, going to get towels, water, snacks… And Dave wrestled my SUP down for me – that was a fun morning! Loves to my fam 🙂

Two generations of mothering…

My mom is the best. I asked if she could just sit somewhere nearby and be my cupholder while I peeled Ben his orange. She said "Oh my, why don't I just stand right about here? Is that good?" We were laughing so hard that a lady who was visiting the island offered to take a picture.

We were laughing so hard that a lady who was visiting the island offered to take a picture. The lady, Vicky, and her son Dante, enjoyed the tide pools. She speaks Spanish and tried to show me a couple ways for the boys to learn rolling their "r"s as in perros, from a book they love.

Happy house!

New paint and gutters, and a rain chain! Love the sound of that!

Harvesting limes for “limonade”

Sam loves to harvest limes with this bamboo pole he dragged back from a hike. There's a natural notch at the top which grabs the limes perfectly. Then the little "shelves" within the pole itself prevent the lime from going all the way through. It sits right at the top waiting for you to grab it. That's Ben's job :)

Can you guess what happened here?

Funny faces color a grey day

Another grey day and mommy still under the weather. Trying some color on to brighten the day! Ben is a monk seal, Sam is a narwhal, and Mom is a parrotfish! Gramma was a blue whale :) We all went out to Kalapawai this way, just for kicks.

Ponzi scheme payoff

Richard lost a lens from his glasses while doing bunny hop races over the weekend...then I found it the next day...then I "hid" it again so Sam could "find" it to earn the prize money, Sam "found" it, earned prize money, bought a set of Legos at Longs, then when we came back home to "find" the lens, we couldn't! We'd already told Richard we'd found it, and spent our prize money! So I looked and looked, raked the yard...looked and looked. Finally found it again today...and we collected! Sam has a good helper, can you tell?

Funny pool jumping

Sam has informed us that for his 6th birthday he would like to jump from the roof into a pool. So he's getting started early, jumping off everything and this time into the kiddie pool. Look at his face - he thinks it's hysterical! He cracked up when he saw the look on his face :)

Easter family time

I think these are happy noises :) Pretty necklace and earrings from Mom and Richard!

We had a good time with Mom and Richard this weekend – Easter egg hunt on Saturday with some special friends who brought the boys their first Easter baskets – then Easter dinner as a family on Sunday. Everyone is feeling a bit better after the 12-day virus. Dave is the last to be on the mend (he managed to sleep through three Easter services this morning!). And I am very grateful to have only had a mild version of it – which is STILL hanging around if you can believe that. While I can’t complain, I am ready to wake up without a sniffle, sore throat and fatigue.

Daddy still feeling pretty sick, but reading Sam one of his favorite books.

sherbet shakes and cupcakes!

Thanks for the cupcakes mom! They made for a delicious breakfast dessert!

I’m enjoying spoiling my boys after a trying week – they had sherbet shakes for their morning milk (sherbet has 20% of your vit C needs, after all), then cupcakes for “breakfast dessert”! I am finding that hopping around the house is great fun. I even found a way to improve my hopping technique so that I don’t lose any time in my scurrying to do chores! And it was independent validation that a real bunny’s hopping technique is fast…you try and see how you hop fastest 🙂 We’re having an Easter egg hunt later with special friends, and I think a hopping race might just break out! Oh – Sam just informed me that Nerds have vit C as well because they are sour.

Boys on the mend

Mom is so cute with the boys, and so brave for getting near their germs!

Dave is home after a crazy week! My two little boys are feeling better after a 12-day cold, and Dave is on probably day 4 of it. Here’s hoping it doesn’t last 12 days. He had a big inspection at work so he was there very late, and stayed over at the Navy Lodge a couple nights to get some rest. Happy Easter to everyone! Lots of love and aloha to you all . . .
